“On this day a  rare February Rainbow was seen here in Northern Missouri at sunset.  This rainbow was visible over much of the area and was noticed by many people.  It was seen as a partial bow in some areas and completely full and even double in others depending on where the rain was falling.”

Caparo T1 official debut

Posted in Automotive by Khaos on the April 18, 2006

Caparo

Holy shit. A 1100 pound car with 3g’s cornering AND can go 500 miles on a tank of gas on the highway….sign me up!

“The ultra lightweight T1, which weighs less than 500kg, is a British designed 2-seater which has been developed using aerospace and high formula racing technology. The compact V8 engine develops approximately 500 hp and the resultant 1,000 hp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio enables the T1 to accelerate form 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and to from 0 to 100 mph in less than 10 seconds making it the world’s fastest accelerating and braking road car.

It is also fast round corners with 3g braking and cornering ability equivalent to a Le Mans Prototype. The T1’s high power-to-weight ratio delivers phenomenal performance on the track. Similarly, the same principles of lightweight design in a car one-third the weight of the average family saloon combined with a normal 15 gallon (70-litre) fuel tank means a range better than the average car of up to 500 miles (800km) on public highways.”

Saturn previews Sky Red Line ahead of New York debut

Posted in Automotive by Khaos on the April 11, 2006

Media 2006 04 Skyred1    Saturn Sky Red Line

Wow, who would have ever thought that one day I would wake up and say “Damn, I want a Saturn!” I loved the Pontiac Solstice when it first cane out but I think the Saturn Sky is even sexier…Especially a TURBO version!

“NEW YORK – Saturn continues its product revitalization with the 2007 Sky Red Line performance roadster, which is debuting at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. The Red Line, available at Saturn retailers this fall, builds on the Sky’s established performance character, offering even more power and sportier driving dynamics combined with a bold design and driver-focused interior.

The Red Line gets a boost in performance from an Ecotec turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, GM’s first direct injection offering in North America. It produces 260 horsepower* (194 kw) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque* (353 Nm) at 2500 rpm, making it GM’s highest specific output engine ever at 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement (130 hp / 97 kw per liter) and the most powerful engine in the Ecotec family.

  • Other Red Line technical highlights include:
    • Standard torque-sensing limited-slip differential
    • Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control
    • Performance-tuned suspension
  • Technical elements also standard on the 2007 Sky roadster include:
    • Four-wheel independent short/long arm suspension for optimal handling and stability
    • Coil-over Bilstein monotube shocks for excellent wheel control and road isolation
    • Hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion power steering for quick, responsive vehicle control
    • Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS for excellent stopping performance
    • Wide track for excellent stability and superior handling
    • Near 50/50 weight distribution for balanced handling
    • Structural tunnel design and hydroformed longitudinal frame rails for a stiff body that results in Greater vehicle responsiveness

Pricing is said to start at $23,690 for the standard Sky, which is dissapointing considering if they could have priced it around $20k I think it would have been a huge success. No mention yet on pricing for the Red Line version.

Hack Attack: Build your own DVR

Posted in Hardware, Technology by Khaos on the April 11, 2006

diy-dvr

Well, I know there have been a ton of these DIY-DVR setups, but I was cleaning out my loft and realized I had 5 old PC’s just sitting in there collecting dust (and I have about 5 more in storage), so Im finally thinking about jacking all the harddrives and building a lean mean media/dvr machine!

“With all the potential controversy and uncertainty surrounding TiVo firmware upgrades, the time to build your own DVR has never been better.  With your own DVR, you can get all the benefits of a TiVo and more without the recurring cost for subscription.  This week, I’m going to show you how simple it is to turn your computer into a DVR.  After that, I’ll show you a few ways that I use my DVR to take it beyond TiVo.
Whether you’re using your current PC, repurposing an old one, or going all out on a dedicated DVR to put under your TV, you can get so much more out of your own DVR than you could ever get out of a TiVo.”

This article interested me because everyone I know uses MythTV, which is probably the best, but I would like to try out this SageTV out. Looks pretty good regardless and Im excited for a new project!

GravityPlane » The Gravity-Powered Aircraft

Posted in Technology, Wow by Khaos on the April 11, 2006

Gravity Plane

Just came across this today at DamnInteresting.com and I hope, if its actually true, that someone puts up the funding to build a prototype of this. Im ALL for new ways of cheap transportation, even if this thing would fly slow it could usher in a new breed of cheap air travel.

“In order for the GravityPlane to become airborne, gas bags inside a pair of rigid, zeppelin-like structures are filled with helium from storage tanks inside the vehicle.  This causes the aircraft to become lighter-than-air, and it rises from the ground.  Compressed-air jets on the sides of the craft add further propulsion, pushing the vehicle skyward and decreasing the craft’s overall weight by releasing the stored air which acts as ballast.  Once the craft reaches the altitude where the helium is no longer lighter than the surrounding air– theoretically as high as ten miles up– it is unable to climb any further.  Some of the stored compressed air is then expanded into the dirigible areas, decreasing the buoyancy effect of the helium and starting the aircraft’s descent phase.

As gravity pulls the plane towards the earth, the long wings are moved to the swept-back position to reduce wind drag, and air turbines mounted on the top of the craft capture some of the forward momentum and use it to drive air pumps which can refill the on-board compressed air storage tanks.  In this gliding mode, the aircraft achieves aerodynamic lift for a gradual descent at high speeds, and can travel in this configuration for about 400 to 600 miles.  At the end of the gliding phase, the wings are redeployed.  The compressed air can once again be forced out through the compressed air jets, pushing the vehicle upwards and increasing the vehicle’s buoyancy to lighter-than-air once again, beginning the cycle anew.  This process can be repeated as many times as needed to cover the required distance.”

Cool video of this proposed perpetual flying machine can be seen here.
